photography of still life, and especially the photography of food, is a very fascinating and easy to implement, since it does not need any open spaces or special equipment: just a table, a light source (natural such a large window or artificial such as a flash), a reflector (okay any reflective surface to be placed in front of the primary light source), some pasta (or whatever you want to capture delicacy, provided it is eaten before the shooting) and here's to you all that we need to make the winning shot.
For pictures shown in this tutorial I've thought a play of light and shadow able to make the scene very hot, depending on subject photographed (a beautiful composition of homemade pastas, our warm and welcoming home :-). The main difficulty in this general is in the search for balanced lighting can create the right atmosphere to bring out the essence and goodness of the food to be photographed.
For a shooting similar to the one shown I suggest you use an external Speedlite flash with slave function compatible with your camera model. The slave mode allows the flash is remote, separately from the body, thereby lighting the subject of considerable effect.
A beautiful wooden table is an excellent background for scenes of atmosphere, so if you have one use it, otherwise you usually require a tablecloth fabric preferably in light colors.
Set your Speedlite slave mode power to medium-low and place it on a tripod or on a shelf behind your composition, possibly a little higher (at least a foot) and a distance of about one meter (this provision clearly can be customized to achieve different effects from those proposed in the pictures below).
On the opposite side, ie on the side from which you want to photograph, placed a spotlight to illuminate your subject better (unless you have a professional you can remedy with a white card or a mirror) so that the light the flash can illuminate both sides of the subject.
I suggest you use the camera in manual mode to control all parameters. Turn the camera flash to control the slave flash and start with a test shot. Observe the result in order to change the settings machine and correct the faults in successive shots (if you do not need because you've got the perfect shot the first time then you are so good that the next tutorial you can write! ;-)).
1) Light: The light flash from the front of the machine is used basically to control the flash slave, but can flatten the scene and eliminating the atmosphere around this subject. To avoid this unpleasant effect on the trick is to reduce the power.
2) Shadows : pay attention to disturbing shadows that can occur in some cases with lights without diffusers. To make the light softer in these cases can help you with the speakers like a small umbrella or a softbox.
3) focal length for this type of recovery the ideal focal length is between 50 and 70 mm, preferably be coupled to a diaphragm rather than closed if you want to get an overall focus of ' image (and obviously quite open to focus on only one detail by blurring everything what is around, but this depends on the specific application considered besides personal taste).
